Avatar: The Last Airbender fans disappointed as movie project gets canceled this Christmas.

Just when you thought everything was smooth sailing with the changes at Paramount and CBS, the corporate strategy for Avatar: The Last Airbender takes a surprising turn. Unfortunately, I have to share some disappointing news: the upcoming film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, will bypass theaters entirely and head straight to streaming in 2026. Christmas is (mildly) ruined.

Back in 2021, Viacom, the then-owners of Paramount, announced the creation of Avatar Studios to kick off a series of stories set in the Avatar universe. At the forefront was a new movie featuring Aang and the Aang Gang. The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender faced multiple delays over the years, even as the studio made strides, with Steven Yeun and Dave Bautista eventually confirmed as part of the cast. However, updates have been scarce, and an entirely new Avatar series, Safe Havens, was unveiled since the initial announcement of The Legend of Aang. While fans can take solace in the fact that the movie hasn’t been completely scrapped, a recent announcement from Paramount confirmed that the theatrical release plans for The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender have been entirely abandoned.

Boo, hiss, etc. On a brighter note, some exciting casting news emerged alongside this announcement: Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Freida Pinto, and Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan will lend their voices to characters in the film. But now it’s headed straight to Paramount Plus, where it will serve as a lead-in to the debut of Safe Havens.

I know I should be thankful that Paramount isn’t completely burying the movie and opting for a tax write-off. (RIP, Batgirl.) Avatar fans are still getting a feast—alongside the new series and film, there are new video games, stunning Magic: The Gathering cards, and second and third seasons of Netflix’s live-action show for those who enjoy that. But I was really hoping to see Aang on the big screen. I wanted this franchise to have its redemption arc after the M. Night Shyamalan film, to rise to the level of cultural icons like SpongeBob SquarePants.

No luck. Like Amon stripping Korra of her bending powers, the essence of The Legend of Aang has been diminished to mere #content. Sadly, I don’t think the patched-up Avatar can swoop in to save the day this time.

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender is set to premiere on Paramount Plus in fall 2026.
