James Cameron vows to hold a press conference if Avatar 4 and 5 don’t come to fruition.
As of now, Avatar: Fire and Ash has raked in over half a billion globally. While it’s still early to make predictions, it seems likely that the revenue will continue to climb. Despite this impressive success, the mastermind behind the franchise, James Cameron, is taking a measured approach regarding the future of Pandora.
Cameron has long envisioned a saga that spans at least five films, with whispers about the fifth installment suggesting it could take the Na’vi to Earth. However, if the third film doesn’t quite match the success of its predecessors, Cameron has a contingency plan for sharing the future of Avatar if the sequels don’t materialize.
“If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference, and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do,” Cameron shared. “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point,” he admitted. “I hope it does.”
This approach could certainly provide an intriguing conclusion to the story. Given the extensive lore Cameron has crafted, such a press conference might be quite lengthy. Fortunately, he has also expressed interest in expanding the Avatar universe through books if the films don’t continue.
“There’s so much culture and backstory and lateral detail in these characters that’s been worked out. I’d love to do something that’s at that level of granular detail.” However, he acknowledged the risks, noting, “There’s no business model for it anymore. People aren’t reading.” While that’s debatable, a novel by James Cameron would likely be a captivating read.
