Duffer Brothers Discuss Mike’s Response to the Stranger Things Reveal Scene
There’s definitely a lot to dive into with the second volume of Stranger Things. Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) have officially split. We finally get clarity on the nature of the Upside Down, and perhaps most significantly, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) came out in a deeply emotional moment.
This revelation has been anticipated by fans for a while, and the Duffers approached it with great care in crafting the script for the final season. One key aspect they made sure to highlight was Mike Wheeler’s (Finn Wolfhard) reaction to it all.
Throughout Will’s journey of self-discovery, he harbored a long-standing crush on Mike that went unreturned. As Will reflects on this, we see Mike listening intently alongside the others. In a recent interview, the Duffer Brothers were asked if this visual moment indicated that Mike had finally grasped the truth. Ross Duffer confirmed, “That was the intent.”
The moment of realization for Mike and the group stems from Will reminiscing about a conversation he had with Robin (Maya Hawke) regarding her own first crush.
“Once Will starts talking about Tammy and his experiences, it’s Mike — and his friends — all coming to understand for the first time, even if Mike has been a bit oblivious over the years, what his friend is expressing,” Ross explained.
Striking the right balance in this sensitive and impactful scene was crucial. For Mike, “he’s recognizing what Will has felt all along.” Meanwhile, for Will, who has emerged as a pivotal character this season, “it’s about him embracing his identity, shedding fear, and expressing himself to his friends and family.” Now, all that remains is for the group to take down Vecna once and for all. We’ll see how it all unfolds on Netflix this New Year’s Eve, and we hope these questions find resolution in the Stranger Things finale.
