Nier Automata’s 9th Anniversary Brings a Tease from the Producer, But Fans Shouldn’t Expect Too Much

Given the immense popularity of Nier: Automata and the endless stream of 2B merchandise, it’s surprising that Square Enix hasn’t released a new mainline game in the eight years since. However, we might not have to wait much longer for news, as Yosuke Saito, the series producer, has hinted at something for next year.

In a recent conversation, Saito mentioned that 2026 will mark the ninth anniversary of Nier: Automata. He teased, “We’re also preparing just a little something, so please don’t get too excited with anticipation.”

While Saito’s comments don’t suggest a brand new game or a mainline console entry just yet, it seems something related to Nier: Automata is on the horizon. Whether it will be a spin-off, a multimedia project, or even more merchandise and crossovers remains to be seen.

Director Yoko Taro has previously addressed fan criticisms about his work ethic, clarifying that several of his projects have been canceled during development. He stated, “I believe that if I’m going to release something weird, I’d be better off not releasing anything at all.”

Saito also noted that next year marks the 40th anniversary of Dragon Quest, expressing his hope for a grand celebration that everyone can join.

Yoko Taro has shared that while he has “no regrets” about his work, he has “never felt like I carried out anything completely.”
