Fallout Season 2, Episode 2 Recap: The Unchanging Nature of War and Radscorpions

Spoilers for this week’s episode of Fallout ahead. Last week, we followed Lucy and Cooper Howard, aka The Ghoul, as they chased after Hank. This time, the spotlight shifts to Maximus, the newly knighted member of the Brotherhood of Steel, and his faction’s activities in the Mojave Wasteland. The episode kicks off with a flashback to Shady Sands during its golden days, a vibrant city reminiscent of life before The Great War. We see Maximus’ parents in their cozy home, where his father is testing the water for radiation and discovers that most of it is safe to drink, offering hope for the city’s future. However, their peace is shattered when a wandering nomad arrives with an atomic bomb, putting everyone at risk. In a frantic attempt to disarm it, Maximus’ father accidentally triggers the bomb’s failsafe, starting a three-minute countdown. With no time left, he hides Maximus in the kitchen refrigerator and shares a heartbreaking farewell with his wife before they perish in the explosion.

Meanwhile, in Vault 33, a young Hank Maclean prepares to read Lucy a bedtime story, revealing through his pip-boy that he was the one who activated the bomb remotely. Fast forward to the present, Knight Maximus leads a squad of power-armored knights into a ghoul-infested facility. After a brutal fight, they recover a piece of old-world technology crucial to their mission. Later, Elder Cleric Quintus informs Maximus that this tech is essential for their goal of reclaiming the lost world. With it, the Brotherhood activates windmill turbines that clear away massive sand dunes, uncovering the buried Area 51 facility.

As we check in on Lucy and Cooper, they discuss how the wasteland will change Lucy in ways she can’t yet comprehend. After insisting she won’t end up like Cooper, she hears a cry for help from an abandoned hospital. Sticking to her principle of treating others as she wishes to be treated, Lucy decides to investigate, despite Cooper’s protests. Inside, they find an injured man and woman, whom Cooper refers to as “tunics,” suggesting they hail from further east. In a shocking turn, Cooper shoots the injured man and takes a bite of his flesh, only to spit it out in disgust upon realizing he’s been poisoned. Before they can regroup, a swarm of radscorpions attacks. As they fend them off, both Cooper and the woman get stung. With poison spreading through their bodies, Lucy must choose who to use the last stimpak on. She opts to save the woman and help her home, promising to return for Cooper, who angrily reminds her of her own rule.

Meanwhile, in Vault 31, junior Vault-Tec executives awaken after 200 years of cryogenic sleep. Amid the confusion, Norm Maclean announces it’s Reclamation Day and falsely claims Bud Askins is dead. He insists he’s been chosen to lead them out of the vault, which leads to chaos and panic. In the Vault-Tec facility in Vegas, Hank experiments with miniaturizing a mind control device using mice, but his attempts repeatedly fail. He nearly succeeds when one mouse sits upright, but it ultimately fails as well.

Back at Area 51, the Brotherhood of Steel uncovers a treasure trove of war relics, weapons, and vehicles from American history, along with an icebox. Using the cold fusion they secured from the battle at Griffith Observatory, they make Area 51 operational as their new base. Here, Scribe Dane questions Maximus about his personality changes since his promotion. Maximus mentions Lucy and how her absence has shifted his focus to Brotherhood duties, but Dane reassures him that Lucy might still be out there. Elder Cleric Quintus arranges a meeting with Brotherhood chapters from the Grand Canyon and Yosemite to discuss uniting against the Commonwealth chapter. The other factions warn that the Commonwealth won’t relinquish power without igniting a civil war. Quintus reveals that with the discovery of Area 51, they now possess more fusion cores than ever before, which could fuel their conflict. The other chapters agree to join forces against the Commonwealth.

On the road, Lucy guides the tunic woman home, but the woman begins to act strangely and vanishes after giving Lucy a vague warning. Lucy soon spots torch-bearing soldiers in the hills, revealing them to be the Legion, clad in Roman attire. In Vault 31, Norm and the junior executives devise a plan to escape through the ventilation system. They manage to reach the surface, where Norm marvels at the beauty of the sky for the first time. Meanwhile, Hank continues his experiments, thawing out a Vault-Tec Premium Elite Plus customer. After attaching a device to the man’s neck and questioning him about his purchase, Hank is enraged to learn he didn’t buy it for his family. In a fit of anger, he activates the device, resulting in a gruesome failure.

With multiple Brotherhood chapters gathered, the atmosphere becomes chaotic with drinking, partying, and fighting. Maximus is challenged to a hand-to-hand combat match by a fellow brother, leading to a bloody confrontation where he ultimately stabs the brother with his own knife. Dane watches disapprovingly, struggling to recognize the man Maximus has become. Just as the fight concludes, an unexpected Vertibird arrives, bringing Paladin Harkness, a liaison from the Commonwealth chapter. He announces he’s heard rumors of a civil war and questions why he wasn’t invited, signaling the Commonwealth’s awareness of the brewing conflict.

This week’s episode shook things up significantly. Lucy and Cooper find themselves separated, Maximus dives deeper into the Brotherhood’s mission, and Norm finally steps into the surface world with a group of followers. The episode highlights the fractured nature of the wasteland, with factions like the Brotherhood of Steel, the Legion, and the Great Khans all vying for power, ensuring that violence is inevitable. As always in Fallout, “war… war never changes.”
