Madden Trailer Hints at 2026’s Most Exciting Video Game Film

In a year already brimming with video game adaptations like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat 2, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the upcoming film centered on John Madden could very well steal the spotlight in 2026. It’s shaping up to be one of the most intriguing entries. With Nicolas Cage stepping into the role of John Madden, Christian Bale portraying Al Davis, and David O. Russell directing, there’s a lot to look forward to.

This film is undeniably a video game movie. The biopic “follows the football legend from Super Bowl triumphs with the Raiders to transforming the game with Madden NFL,” as described in the synopsis. The long-awaited project delves into Madden’s storied coaching career with the Raiders while also highlighting his collaboration with Electronic Arts and the Madden NFL series. Keep an eye out for a quick glimpse of the game at 0:26 in the trailer. John Mulaney will portray Trip Hawkins, the founder of Electronic Arts, in this upcoming film.

After his coaching days with the Raiders, Madden transitioned to a prominent role as an NFL commentator, earning 16 Sports Emmy Awards. His engaging on-screen presence caught the attention of EA’s Trip Hawkins, who proposed the idea for a realistic sports game that evolved into John Madden Football, later known as Madden NFL, which has become one of the most successful and influential video game franchises ever. The film will explore this pivotal chapter in Madden’s life. At one point, Will Ferrell was even in discussions to take on the role of John Madden.

Alongside Cage, Bale, and Mulaney, the cast includes Kathryn Hahn as Virginia Madden, Sienna Miller as Carol Davis, and Shane Gillis in a yet-to-be-revealed role. The script is penned by David O. Russell, based on an earlier draft by Cambron Clark.

Madden is set to premiere on Prime Video just in time for Turducken season: November 26, 2026.
