Donkey Kong Bananza Shines on Switch 2, But Here’s What I Wish I Knew Before Playing
As my first experience with a Donkey Kong title, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Donkey Kong Bananza, but it certainly delivers. I’d argue it’s currently the standout reason to own a Switch 2. This game feels like a supercharged version of Super Mario Odyssey, boasting a larger scale and a more powerful protagonist. The mix of platforming, puzzle-solving, and collectible-hunting is instantly recognizable, but DK’s ability to wreak havoc adds a fresh twist to the gameplay. Unlike Super Mario Odyssey, where mastering the plumber’s skills and Cappy’s abilities is key, DK can smash through nearly anything in the various sublayers of Donkey Kong Bananza. However, this approach can lead to some confusion; I found myself lost more times than I’d like to admit, as my relentless digging for fossils and gold often distracted me from simply enjoying the adventure.
Collectibles are hard to resist, so make sure to keep an eye out for the valuable Donkey Kong Bananza bananas. Also known as Banandium Gems, these tasty collectibles are crucial for DK’s journey, with many hidden in challenge levels like Hanging on Roof Road and Nostalgia Country. If you’re aiming for the game’s true ending, which I’ll detail later, gathering as many bananas as possible is essential. They also provide immediate benefits by granting DK skill points—every five bananas nets you one point that can be used to unlock various skills. It’s often worth straying from the main path to grab a few bananas and power up DK, even if you’re not aiming to collect them all (there are nearly 800, after all).
You can technically play Donkey Kong Bananza on Switch 1, but only through online co-op, and you’ll be limited to playing as a shoulder-mounted Pauline.
One issue I encountered is that some skills feel a bit underwhelming throughout most of Donkey Kong Bananza, leading to wasted skill points. After resetting my skill points, I was able to experiment with different skills to find the best ones, which are detailed in a guide. In addition to skill points, you’ll also unlock the titular Donkey Kong Bananza transformations—temporary animal forms that grant unique abilities, from powerful punches to speedy sprints that help you navigate tricky terrain. Each Bananza has its own skill set, and I’ve highlighted the most effective ones in the skills guide.
With skills, Bananzas, and various outfits for DK and Pauline all interacting with environmental hazards and special terrain types, there are numerous systems to keep in mind. It’s wise to check out some general Donkey Kong Bananza tips to help streamline your experience. I can’t emphasize enough how beneficial it is to unlock Getaways and purchase Red Balloons! And don’t hesitate to activate the Donkey Kong Bananza Assist Mode whenever you need it. With constant objective markers, you’ll rarely feel lost, and DK’s improved health makes him a much tougher character.
If you’re curious about how long it takes to finish Donkey Kong Bananza, it really depends on how much time you spend hunting for collectibles.
As you explore the sublayers, you’ll encounter some unique ones that don’t follow the typical linear format. The Divide is a prime example, presenting you with the Donkey Kong Bananza Divide choice, allowing you to decide whether to venture into the Freezer or Forest layer next. While this choice isn’t particularly significant, knowing what to expect in each layer can be helpful. Eventually, you’ll reach the relaxing Resort Layer, where you can find the Collectone that lets you scan amiibo figures for Donkey Kong Bananza amiibo unlocks. To be honest, most of these unlocks aren’t all that thrilling.
Continue through the remaining layers, and you’ll eventually reach the conclusion of DK and Pauline’s epic journey to the planet’s core. But it’s not truly the end; there’s a whole post-game quest in Donkey Kong Bananza that you’ll need to complete for the ultimate ending. Be prepared to collect a lot of bananas, which can be quite a commitment if you haven’t been thorough in your searches. But don’t worry, I can guide you through the entire process to wrap up DK’s adventure.
