Duffer Brothers Hint at New Stranger Things Project, Promising a Unique Take Unlike Game of Thrones or Star Wars
Stranger Things may have concluded its five-season journey, but the universe is far from finished, with exciting new projects on the horizon. While the stage play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, continues to captivate audiences, the Duffer brothers are hinting at a spin-off that will introduce a fresh cast of characters, along with a secret project they’re not quite ready to unveil.
“It’s just one step at a time,” Matt Duffer shared when discussing the future of Stranger Things, which also includes the upcoming animated series, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. “Right now, everything you mentioned is all we have planned… Well, there’s one other thing I can’t discuss, so I guess I sort of misled you, but it’s also really cool. The live-action spin-off is our main focus at the moment.”
“I wish I could share more,” he added, “but we have a specific vision for how the show and the Stranger Things universe can evolve. It’s quite different from franchises like Game of Thrones or Star Wars, because we’re not following that path.”
Ross Duffer chimed in, expressing pride in Tales from ’85 and the play, but emphasized that they’re exploring the last few small gaps in the narrative established throughout Stranger Things. “To move forward, we need to create a new mythology; otherwise, we’ll just keep squeezing into tighter spaces, which feels forced. Our aim is to expand the universe and do something fresh and innovative.”
Matt Duffer also mentioned that it’s been “exhilarating” to develop “new characters and a new mythology,” though most details remain under wraps for now. “I can’t wait to share more when I’m allowed, but Netflix PR is definitely listening,” he joked.
One intriguing detail about the spin-off has emerged. In a recent conversation, the showrunners hinted that a specific element from season 5 will play a crucial role in the new series – the rock in the briefcase that Vecna discovered in the caves as a child. For those curious about this detail, there’s an explanation available regarding the season 5 finale.
The entire Stranger Things series is currently available for streaming.
