James Haeck Takes on Role as Senior Game Designer for D&D at Wizards of the Coast

Wizards of the Coast has brought on veteran Dungeons & Dragons writer James Haeck as a senior game designer, marking a significant step as the D&D team continues to evolve. Haeck shared this exciting news during a December 31 episode of the Eldritch Lorecast podcast, highlighting a transition from freelance work to a pivotal role in shaping future D&D books directly within the company.

This hiring comes on the heels of notable changes within D&D’s design team. In mid-2025, seasoned designers Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford left Wizards to join Critical Role’s publishing division, Darrington Press. Since then, Wizards has been filling senior creative positions with designers who emerged during the height of 5th edition, with Haeck being the latest addition.

Haeck is recognized for their contributions to some of 5e’s standout hardcover adventures. They served as the lead designer for Call of the Netherdeep, the first official D&D campaign set in Critical Role’s Exandria, and co-wrote Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, another Critical Role setting. Additionally, Haeck co-authored Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus. Dragon Heist is celebrated for its versatility, offering a rich urban environment filled with rival factions and four seasonal variations that enhance replayability. Descent into Avernus delivers a high-octane experience featuring memorable demons and devils, a quest for a legendary sword wielded by a fallen angel, and “Infernal War Machines” that evoke a Mad Max vibe in a hellish setting.

Beyond their work on hardcover adventures, Haeck has spent several years as the lead writer for D&D Beyond, crafting and editing numerous guides designed to help players and Dungeon Masters navigate gameplay, run encounters, and create campaigns. Their extensive contributions have made them a prominent figure in this era of D&D.

Haeck’s hiring comes shortly after Justice Ramin Armin was elevated to D&D design director. They will collaborate with F. Wesley Schneider as principal game designer, alongside Makenzie De Armas and Amanda Hemon as senior designers.

While Wizards of the Coast has yet to disclose which upcoming D&D products Haeck will be leading, or much about its 2026 lineup, Haeck mentioned during the podcast that they would be working on future books but withheld specific details until official announcements are made. The addition of another senior designer with a strong background in hardcover projects hints that new reveals may be on the horizon. It’s evident that Wizards of the Coast is committed to leveraging the talents of designers who have shaped some of 5e’s most cherished adventures as the game gears up for its next chapter.
