Clair Obscur Developers Focus on Creativity Over Audience Expectations for Their Next Game

One of the key advantages of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at its launch last year was its freedom from high expectations. Sandfall Interactive, a fresh face in the development scene, boasted a talented team but lacked the pressure of being a well-established studio with a celebrated debut. Now that it has gained recognition, the team asserts that their next project will not merely aim to satisfy fan expectations.

In a recent interview, lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen shared that while she considers herself “a bit of a people pleaser” and is aware of what fans want, Sandfall Interactive is primarily focused on their own creative vision rather than simply catering to audience demands.

“Creatively, we’ve always let our North Star be our own personal taste in terms of what we think is cool, what it is we enjoy and want to see,” she explained. “I’ve seen too many TV shows and books be swayed trying to please a lot of people, and in the process, you end up losing the heart of what’s there. So we feel like we need to trust our instincts and continue to trust the vision behind the studio.”

Sandfall has expressed a clear desire to create another Clair Obscur game, and fans are eager for it to delve into some of the unresolved mysteries from Expedition 33, particularly those significant revelations in the RPG’s third act. However, it seems that the elements fans are excited about won’t dictate Sandfall’s creative direction, suggesting that the next installment could explore entirely new themes. It will be intriguing to see what the studio has in store, even if it diverges from our expectations. Given their proven track record, staying open to their next move could lead to something truly remarkable.
