Brandon Sanderson reveals interest from major studios in a Mistborn game, aiming for a unique approach to adaptation rights.
For over a decade, there’s been buzz about a video game adaptation of Mistborn, and now author Brandon Sanderson is feeling optimistic that the stars are finally aligning for it to become a reality. He recently shared that he’s in discussions with several major AAA studios about bringing a proper Mistborn game to life.
In his latest update on his annual blog, Sanderson expressed, “I’ve started to get some real interest on the video game front, and I feel I’m finally getting established enough that we can make a Mistborn game happen. To that end, I’ve started talking to some AAA developers.”
Currently, the project is in the pitching phase, where Sanderson is exploring potential adaptations with various game studios. He noted that these initial conversations are “encouraging,” especially since the rights for Mistborn are no longer tied up with film adaptations.
“These rights were tied up with the film rights for the last… oh, six or seven years, so I didn’t get to test the market on them until recently,” he explained. “I’m trying to do things differently this time in an effort to retain control of my video game rights. I already have interest from some major players in the video game industry (who I like a lot).”
If the concept of a Mistborn game sounds familiar, you might recall Mistborn: Birthright, an action RPG that was in development for several years in the early 2010s before it was ultimately scrapped. That project was intended to be a prequel set centuries before the events of the books.
As for the new game project, details are still under wraps, and since it’s in the pitching stage, Sanderson’s vision for it is likely still evolving. However, he’s eager to see it come to fruition. “If you are a decision maker at a AAA studio,” he concluded, “or a major independent, and you’ve always wanted to make a Mistborn or Stormlight game… well, you would want to contact my reps now.”
Sanderson has dabbled in the gaming world before, contributing to the strategy game Moonbreaker from Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds, and he has an open invitation to pitch ideas to Bandai Namco. He also penned a couple of novels expanding the lore of Infinity Blade, a mobile game from Epic that offered a fantasy twist on the classic Punch-Out! format. This background might explain why Mistborn’s most notable foray into gaming has been through Fortnite.
