Lego Packs a Full Computer into a Single Brick for Star Wars Sound Effects
Lego is taking a significant leap in how kids engage with their iconic plastic bricks, and it’s all about a new, compact innovation. Introducing the Smart Brick, which is the same size as a standard 4×2 Lego brick but packed with advanced technology akin to what you’d find in modern smartphones. This tiny powerhouse is set to bring some exciting features to the Lego experience.
On January 5, during the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show, Lego revealed Smart Play, a fresh system of Lego pieces designed to work seamlessly with existing bricks. The Smart Brick is the centerpiece of this system, functioning like a miniature PC that powers any set utilizing Smart Play. It boasts an array of tech, including light and sound sensors, accelerometers, a miniature speaker with an onboard synthesizer, and a custom microchip smaller than a typical Lego stud. Plus, it charges wirelessly and fits into any set just like a regular brick.
So, what can this innovative Smart Brick do? When combined with other Smart Play components, such as Smart Tiles or Smart Minifigs, it can respond dynamically to how kids play. For instance, in a video shared by Lego, kids attach a propeller to a dinosaur, and as the propeller spins, the Smart Brick emits helicopter sounds.
In the upcoming Star Wars sets launching with Smart Play in March, the Emperor minifig will play the Imperial March when placed on his throne. Ships will make laser blast sounds, and lightsabers will hum and whirl as figures wielding them are moved.
One of the standout features of this system is that it doesn’t require a phone or computer. There’s no app needed for these new Smart components, making setup straightforward for kids and their parents. Essentially, you start building, and the Smart pieces interact as intended. This approach is a significant improvement over previous attempts to integrate technology with Lego, which often felt cumbersome due to the need for phones, updates, and cables.
We won’t have to wait long to see if Lego delivers on its promises, as Smart Play is set to debut in three different Lego Star Wars sets this March.
