“Hytale’s Innovative World Generation Promises to Transform the Block-Game Genre”
Hytale is set to launch its highly anticipated early access next week, and the developers are sharing exciting details about their vision for the game as the release date approaches. A significant change on the horizon is a revamped approach to world generation, which founder Simon Collins-Laflamme believes will represent a “fundamental shift” in how sandbox games, particularly those inspired by Minecraft, create their environments.
Initially, during early access, Hytale will utilize the “V1” world generation system that was developed from 2016 to 2020. However, the team is working on the V2 system, which has been in development since 2021, and this is where the real transformation begins.
While V2 will still employ procedural generation, it introduces more intentional patterns for designers. This means you could influence the generator to favor dark-leaved trees over caves, providing players with a more guided exploration experience akin to traditional crafted game worlds. The developers also hinted at the possibility of creating more experimental worlds, including an alien landscape showcased in a recent video.
The team is committed to empowering modders by providing tools that allow for easy customization of world-generation parameters, all without needing programming skills. A node-based editor will enable users to adjust various world-gen variables, with immediate in-game feedback on those changes.
“This new approach to world generation will redefine the block-game genre,” Collins-Laflamme states. “For the first time, artists and game designers can fully own world generation, having complete control over the final outcome. This marks a significant departure from worlds primarily shaped by programmers.”
To support this vision, the Hytale team is actively hiring over 15 world designers, a notable move for a procedurally generated sandbox game. “Hytale’s vision is to feel carefully handcrafted while remaining infinitely procedural,” he adds, “with design always prioritizing gameplay!”
Collins-Laflamme also reflected on the journey of bringing Hytale back from the brink, stating, “It’s a damn miracle we were able to salvage” what was once a canceled project. “It should have taken years to fix, but within weeks, we got the game into a playable, fun state.”
