AMD Unveils Enhanced Desktop CPU, Sparking Excitement for Future X3D Models
AMD has firmly established its dominance in the desktop CPU arena throughout 2025, consistently outpacing Intel in monthly Steam hardware surveys. At CES, the brand is amplifying its gaming PC momentum with the announcement of a new variant of one of its most sought-after processors.
Introducing the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D, an enhanced version of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. While it retains the same architecture and core specifications as its predecessor, it boosts the clock speed from 5.2GHz to 5.6GHz, matching the Ryzen 9 9900X and surpassing the Ryzen 9 9900X3D.
The 9850X3D maintains the same 8 cores and 16 threads as the original, along with a 120W TDP and the 104MB combined L2+L3 cache.
While this performance increase is certainly noteworthy for gaming, I can’t help but feel that not much has changed to spark my excitement. This might just be a modest performance upgrade, potentially justifying a half-step product, but it does seem like a way to charge more for a CPU that is nearly identical to its predecessor.
What truly excites me about the 9850X3D is the potential impact on the pricing of the existing Ryzen 9000 Series lineup. With a new contender entering the market, it’s likely that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will experience more frequent price drops and possibly deeper discounts from its initial launch price of $479 / $449.
Additionally, this development enhances the value of all AM5 motherboards, demonstrating AMD’s commitment to supporting its platforms with new upgrade options. We now have the AMD Ryzen 7000 family, the initial X3D range, the Ryzen 8000G product stack, the 9000 Series, and an even broader selection of Ryzen 9000 X3D options, all of which promise greater performance.
On the other hand, Intel’s first wave of desktop Core Ultra processors hasn’t gained much traction after a lackluster launch, and with rumors of a new motherboard socket in the pipeline, it’s clear why AMD is basking in the spotlight of the CPU market.
The Ryzen 7 9850X3D is expected to hit the shelves in Q1 of 2026, though AMD has yet to announce a specific launch date or pricing details for this new CPU.
