Lies of P’s creators aim to expand on successful franchises, promising exciting developments for fans in the next 5 to 10 years, while continuing to build on the success of the beloved Soulslike genre.
After nearly two decades of focusing on game development and publishing primarily in its home market, Neowiz has made a significant leap onto the global stage with the release of 2023’s Lies of P. Riding the wave of success from this Soulslike title, the company is gearing up to unveil a range of new projects, aiming to introduce exciting new properties over the next ten years.
“Our aim is to consistently roll out successful IP that fans will eagerly anticipate and support for years to come, even five or ten years down the line,” says Sean Kim, co-CEO of Neowiz. “Right now, we’re working on more than five new titles for PC and consoles, while also seeking to discover global IP through partnerships with Western studios like Zakazane and Wolfeye.”
Kim emphasizes that the company will “continue investing” in “strong partners worldwide” as part of this strategy. However, there’s a strong focus on nurturing local talent, including studios like Wonder Potion, creators of the stylish cyberpunk roguelike Sanabi, and Lizard Smoothie, known for the fantasy action-RPG Shape of Dreams.
Of course, the success of Lies of P remains a priority, having performed exceptionally well on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Following two years of updates and DLC, a sequel is in the works, but Neowiz is keen to avoid being boxed into just Soulslikes or roguelikes.
“Naturally, we will continue the Lies of P franchise. That’s a given,” Kim affirms. “Generally, our development process doesn’t start with a specific genre. It begins with the creative vision of our directors. We prefer not to kick off development by focusing solely on a particular playstyle or game concept.”
Rumors suggest that Lies of P 2 may take inspiration from The Wizard of Oz, much like the first game drew from Pinocchio, with Dorothy taking center stage. Beyond that, fans will have to wait and see what dark and thrilling experiences Neowiz has planned.
“I will not disappoint you”: the director of Lies of P promises “the most fun” as Neowiz gears up for a sequel to one of the standout Soulslikes, noting that the Overture DLC was treated “almost as a sequel” in its own right.
