Get ready for a game-changer: Lego Smart Play is set to revolutionize the way we play!

Lego Smart Play has just revolutionized the way we experience building sets.

Unveiled at CES 2026, this innovative design breathes new life into classic Lego sets by incorporating interactive technology that allows them to respond to your actions. Instead of merely being static models, these sets can now actively engage with you.

At the forefront is the ‘Smart Brick,’ which boasts “more than 20 patented world-firsts” according to the announcement. This compact device, smaller than a typical Lego stud, is equipped with accelerometers, light and sound sensors, a tiny speaker with an onboard synthesizer, and even wireless charging capabilities. It works in tandem with the ‘Smart Tag’—flat plates reminiscent of those found in the Super Mario kits—and Smart Minifigures, enabling these little characters to interact and react to your gameplay.

The initial launch of Lego Smart Play will feature three Star Wars sets: Luke’s Red Five X-Wing (which includes Leia, R2-D2, a Stormtrooper, and a Rebel), Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, and the Throne Room Duel & A-Wing kit. The latter set recreates the climactic showdown between Vader and Luke before the Emperor, complete with handles that allow the minifigs to ‘battle’ using their lightsabers, enhanced by context-sensitive sound effects.

These exciting sets will hit the shelves on March 1, 2026.

This marks a significant shift in Lego’s evolution—one that the company claims is as impactful as the introduction of the minifigure in 1978. Tom Donaldson, Senior VP and head of Lego’s Creative Play Lab, shares this sentiment, stating that this innovation “brings creativity, technology, and storytelling together to make building worlds and stories even more engaging, all without a screen. We truly believe we are setting a new standard for interactive, imaginative experiences and can’t wait to see this innovation in the hands of kids when we launch this year.”

While kids are sure to love it, the potential applications are vast. Imagine movie-themed sets like Rivendell, where characters deliver context-sensitive quotes based on their surroundings. The possibilities for Smart Play are endless.

This feels like a natural progression from the interactive Super Mario models, but it takes things a step further by integrating all that tech into standard minifigures.
