Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider Makes Waves on Netflix
The 2018 Tomb Raider film featuring Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander is climbing the popularity ranks on Netflix. Recent global streaming data reveals that the movie was the No. 9 most-watched film on the platform for the week of December 22 to December 28. Over its two-hour runtime, it garnered 4.2 million views and 8.2 million streaming hours, marking two consecutive weeks in the top 10 of Netflix’s global charts. Its success during the holiday season is particularly impressive, given the competition from festive films, with titles like The Grinch taking the top spot and others like How the Grinch Stole Christmas and My Secret Santa also making the list. Notably, Tomb Raider isn’t available on Netflix in the US, indicating its popularity is driven by international audiences. The film grossed $275 million worldwide, with a significant $216.7 million coming from overseas markets. Directed by Roar Uthaug, the cast also includes Dominic West and Walton Goggins. Among the writers was Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who later became co-creator and co-showrunner for the Fallout TV series on Prime Video. Although plans for a sequel to Tomb Raider were in the works, they never came to fruition. Instead, Prime Video is now developing a live-action Tomb Raider series featuring Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner as Lara Croft. In gaming news, The Game Awards announced two upcoming Tomb Raider titles: a remake of the 1996 classic, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, set for 2026, and a new installment titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst, slated for 2027. Alix Wilton Regan will take on the role of Lara Croft in these new games, succeeding Camilla Luddington.
