PlayStation’s New AI Patent May Allow Games to Play Themselves When Players Are Stuck
Sony has submitted a patent that hints at a future where AI could step in to assist players who are having a tough time with a game. This concept, referred to as “ghost assistance,” would allow the AI to either guide players through challenging sections or take over gameplay entirely. The patent, initially filed in September 2024, outlines how the AI could learn from gameplay footage shared by various users and other online sources.
Over the past few years, Sony has been focused on making its games more accessible. The PS5 launched with the Game Help feature, which provides players with quick tips and tricks through short videos and images that can be accessed during gameplay. While not all developers have embraced this feature, it remains beneficial for those who do. Additionally, Sony has enhanced accessibility options in several of its first-party titles. However, some games like God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West have faced criticism for offering excessive assistance through character dialogues and NPCs that frequently provide guidance. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also exploring similar territory with its AI-driven assistant, Gaming Copilot, which aims to offer in-game help and recommendations.
