The Epic Showdown in Stranger Things’ Finale Draws Inspiration from Baldur’s Gate 3

Dungeons & Dragons plays a significant role in the Netflix sci-fi sensation Stranger Things, and the show’s finale drew inspiration from the acclaimed game Baldur’s Gate 3, as revealed by one of the creators. Spoilers for the Stranger Things finale ahead. Co-creator Matt Duffer shared that he was immersed in the Larian Studios title while crafting the final season. He suggested that the epic confrontation with Vecna and the Mind Flayer echoed themes and elements from both D&D and Baldur’s Gate 3. Duffer noted that the entire cast of characters experienced “self-acceptance” throughout the narrative, making them “absolutely primed” for the climactic battle. “They’re the ultimate team, and it’s the party working together to defeat this threat. Each character brings their own unique skills,” Duffer explained. “That’s where I draw parallels to Dungeons & Dragons and something like Baldur’s Gate. That’s how you tackle these seemingly unstoppable monsters.”

One of Baldur’s Gate 3’s standout features is its unforgettable party members, like Astarion and Shadowheart, each with their own engaging story arcs. Similarly, the characters in Stranger Things faced challenges and evolved significantly over the course of five seasons. The pivotal showdown against the show’s primary villains takes place in a realm known as The Abyss, a desolate wasteland in an alternate dimension. The “party” journeys there through the Upside Down to face Vecna and the Mind Flayer, employing a coordinated assault with firearms, Molotov cocktails, a flare gun, and other brute force tactics.

Stranger Things and Baldur’s Gate 3 also share more direct connections. Some characters in the show are passionate D&D players, often naming the creatures and villains they encounter after D&D entities, like Demogorgons, Vecna, and the Mind Flayer, which is prominently featured in Baldur’s Gate 3. Duffer mentioned that “lots of video game references were woven into that final battle,” though he didn’t go into detail about these references. One clear nod early in the season was a somewhat offbeat scene involving Ghost ‘n Goblins.
