Fallout’s Newest Chapter Brings Back a Classic Foe and Unleashes Mayhem
Spoilers ahead for this week’s episode of Fallout. Last week’s installment provided both veteran fans and newcomers with a glimpse into the factions vying for control in the Mojave Wasteland. From the internal strife within Caesar’s Legion to the NCR’s waning influence, and Maximus’ (Aaron Moten) blunder, the episode was packed with significant developments. However, it felt like the main characters took a backseat to the world-building. This week, though, we finally see Lucy (Ella Purnell) and Cooper (Walton Goggins) make their long-awaited entrance into New Vegas. Let’s break down the latest happenings in the Mojave.
The episode kicks off with an exhilarating pre-war flashback, showcasing Cooper Howard on the Alaskan front during the liberation of Anchorage from Chinese forces. He and a squadmate are on a combat patrol, donning West-Tek’s T-45 Power Armor for the first time, but things quickly go awry. His squadmate’s armor malfunctions, locking his arm in place. Frustrated, Cooper disobeys orders and sends the soldier back to base, opting to continue the patrol solo. This decision backfires when he’s ambushed by a platoon of Chinese soldiers, leading to his armor malfunctioning and him crashing to the ground. Just as he faces certain death, a terrifying roar echoes through the air. A Deathclaw appears, decimating the platoon in a brutal display. The creature inspects Cooper, leaving him for dead, while his commanding officer informs him over the radio that the liberation of Anchorage was a success.
Fast forward to the present, where Maximus grapples with the aftermath of Paladin Xander’s death. He discovers that the Brotherhood of Steel has tracked them to Thaddeus’ (Johnny Pemberton) bottling plant. Fearing for the lives of the ghoul children if they enter, and wanting to keep his involvement in Xander’s death a secret, Maximus persuades Thaddeus to don Xander’s power armor and impersonate him. Reluctantly, Thaddeus agrees, stumbling around in the armor to maintain the ruse.
Meanwhile, Lucy wakes up after being rescued from a cross by the Legion, only to find herself in an NCR remnant camp. As they prepare to return to their devastated home in Shady Sands, the NCR informs her of Cooper’s heroics and inquires about her quest to find her father. When she expresses her intent to bring him to justice, they share the NCR’s mission of restoring order to the wasteland and offer her a duffel bag of weapons for her journey. Lucy and Cooper then set off for The Strip.
We catch a glimpse of Vault 33, where the waterchip is dead, crops are failing, and water is being rationed. However, the “Products of Inbreeding” club is thriving, thanks to a promise made by Overseer Betty (Leslie Uggams), a decision she soon regrets. As they approach New Vegas, Lucy starts showing concerning symptoms like heavy breathing and itching. Cooper reveals that she’s been hooked on Buffout, an in-game steroid known for its addictive qualities. With no time to wait out a withdrawal, he offers her more drugs as a solution.
Back at Area 51, Maximus and Thaddeus return, unaware of the brewing tensions. Dane (Xelia Mendes-Jones) confronts Maximus about his unauthorized actions with Paladin Xander, leading to a shocking revelation: Maximus killed Xander. Dane warns that this could spark a war with the Commonwealth Brotherhood of Steel, but Maximus insists he has a plan to eliminate Elder Cleric Quintus (Michael Cristofer).
In the Los Angeles Wasteland, Norm (Moisés Arias) explores with Vault 31’s inhabitants. One member reminisces about her life before cryosleep, feeling as though only a week has passed. Norm is challenged by Ronnie, Bud Askins’ assistant, who questions his leadership and hints at the importance of the experiments in Vaults 32 and 33. Meanwhile, Overseer Steph (Annabel O’Hagan) meets with Betty in the inter-vault chambers, where Betty pleads for help with the waterchip crisis but is denied unless she can provide a keepsake box belonging to Hank Maclean. Their conversation is secretly observed by Woody (Zach Cherry).
As Cooper and Lucy reach The Strip, they find it eerily deserted, with destroyed Securitron units scattered about. Cooper scouts the area and discovers it’s overrun by the Kings gang, now transformed into vicious ghouls. With limited options, he suggests entering through Freeside to avoid conflict. However, Lucy, under the influence of drugs, grows impatient and opens fire on a ghoul, triggering a bloody confrontation. As she takes down the ghouls, she begins to revel in the violence, while Cooper realizes that New Vegas may have fallen. Lucy notices a discolored finger, hinting at her deteriorating condition.
At Area 51, Thaddeus struggles to maintain his cover as Xander, facing pressure from the leaders of the Yosemite and Coronado chapters, who propose killing Elder Cleric Quintus in exchange for support. Overwhelmed, Thaddeus experiences a panic attack in the power armor. Meanwhile, Maximus confronts the Elder Cleric, revealing he killed Xander to protect a group of ghoul children. The Elder Cleric, enraged, argues that this goes against the Brotherhood’s code, leading to a firefight. In the chaos, Dane steals the Cold Fusion relic to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, igniting a full-blown conflict among the Brotherhood chapters.
As the chaos unfolds, Maximus manages to lock the Elder Cleric in a room and reunites with Dane, who hands him the Cold Fusion relic and urges him to escape. Thaddeus joins them, and they navigate the mayhem to flee Area 51. Woody confronts Steph about her unauthorized meeting with Betty, but his concerns are dismissed as she thanks him and suggests reporting it to herself. Meanwhile, Chet (Dave Register) discovers a hidden drawer containing a Canadian ID card belonging to Steph, revealing her non-American origins.
As Lucy and Cooper delve deeper into The Strip, they notice the complete absence of people. Lucy questions the lack of life, prompting Cooper to suggest they head to Freeside for answers. Their silence is shattered when Lucy’s Pip-Boy detects radiation, followed by a chilling roar. They freeze in terror at the sight of a massive Deathclaw locking onto them.
After last week’s update, this episode of Fallout marks a significant improvement. We finally witness Lucy and Cooper’s arrival in New Vegas, the Brotherhood of Steel reaching a critical juncture, and a deeper exploration of the events in Vaults 32 and 33. The episode seamlessly integrates elements from the games, including the liberation of Anchorage, Deathclaws, and the theme of addiction. It’s clear that the upcoming episodes will continue to deliver thrilling content for eager fans.
