Roblox Introduces Age Verification for Chat Access
Roblox is implementing its previously announced age estimation requirement for users to access the platform’s chat features. This policy, first revealed in November 2025, began rolling out in December to Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. Now, users in all regions where chat is available will need to complete an age verification process.
The age check utilizes facial scanning technology from Persona, which is also employed by other platforms. If users wish to contest their age verification results, they can opt for ID verification. Additionally, parents can use parental controls to adjust their child’s age settings.
Once a user’s age is confirmed, they can engage in chat with others in similar age brackets. According to Roblox, users within each age group can communicate with those in the groups directly above and below them (for example, users aged 9-12 can chat with peers in their group as well as those under 9 and in the 13-15 range). Users under 9 will need parental consent to use chat features.
Roblox reports that tens of millions of daily active users have already completed the age check, with expectations for many more to follow. In the regions where age checks have been mandatory since early December, over 50% of daily active users have completed the process.
Last year, several states initiated lawsuits against Roblox concerning child safety issues. In response to these concerns, the company has not only enforced age checks but also restricted sexual content and enhanced parental control options.
