Director of Night Has Fallen Shares Latest on Gerard Butler’s Action Sequel

Stuntman-turned-director Ric Roman Waugh shares a strong bond with Gerard Butler, affectionately calling him “Jerry.” The rugged action star has headlined four of Waugh’s films, beginning with *Angel Has Fallen*, the third installment in the Fallen series featuring Secret Service agent Mike Banning. This collaboration continued with the spy thriller *Kandahar*, the apocalyptic adventure *Greenland*, and its sequel, *Greenland: Migration*.

The latter is set to hit theaters on January 9, but what’s next for this dynamic duo? There are whispers of a potential return for agent Banning in a fourth installment titled *Night Has Fallen*. However, in a recent chat with Waugh ahead of *Greenland: Migration*’s release, he provided a different perspective.

“We’re open to it, but — and I know Jerry feels the same — we’re not just looking to churn out another sequel,” Waugh explained. “We’d need to find a way to make it fresh, to evolve the Mike Banning character. I mean, who knows, maybe we could do a *Lethal Weapon* twist with an 87-year-old Morgan Freeman going toe-to-toe with Mike Banning. That could be entertaining, but as of now, there’s nothing in the pipeline. It’s something that would need to be figured out.”

While this might not be the update *Olympus Has Fallen* fans were hoping for, it’s reassuring to know that Waugh and Butler are committed to the franchise’s integrity rather than rushing into another sequel.

Reflecting on his collaboration with Butler, Waugh speculates that the actor’s charm lies in his willingness to defy Hollywood norms. In an era where stars like Dwayne Johnson have contracts that prevent them from losing fights on screen, Butler embraces vulnerability and portrays flawed, relatable characters.

“He’s not afraid to show vulnerability and play characters with flaws,” Waugh noted. “We’ve been in a phase of filmmaking dominated by comic book heroes who are invincible and flawless. Jerry isn’t shiny like that, and I appreciate that. He’s down-to-earth and has a youthful spirit. Our society isn’t black and white; it’s filled with shades of gray. We’re increasingly challenging our perceptions of morality, and I find that thrilling to explore in films, and Jerry is all in for that.”

*Greenland: Migration* arrives in theaters on January 9.
