Wolfenstein 3 is reportedly in development, eight years after Wolfenstein 2’s promise to “make America Nazi-free again.”
Today, multiple reports have surfaced indicating that Wolfenstein 3 is finally in the works at MachineGames. Fans have been eagerly anticipating a full third installment in the modern Wolfenstein series for years, and the developers have occasionally hinted at the possibility. It appears that an official announcement may be on the horizon.
A report earlier today suggested that Wolfenstein 3 is “on the cards” at MachineGames, coinciding with the upcoming Wolfenstein TV show. This news was quickly backed up by another source, and when multiple reports align, it’s a strong indication that something significant is happening.
Details about the direction of Wolfenstein 3 remain scarce. However, MachineGames mentioned in an interview last year that they always envisioned the new Wolfenstein series as a trilogy, and it seems that vision is finally coming to life.
Studio head Jerk Gustafsson emphasized this point, stating, “We have always seen this as a trilogy. So that journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for at least that character – what will happen in the second one, and what will happen in the third one. I think that’s important to say because, at least I hope, that we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”
What that story will be is still up in the air. Wolfenstein 2, released in 2017, featured a narrative about the Nazi regime invading the United States in the ’60s, drawing parallels to real-world issues with its marketing, which included slogans like “make America Nazi-free again.”
The second game concluded with a revolution against the Nazis igniting in the US, while the co-op spin-off, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, takes place decades later, showing the regime expelled from the Americas as the conflict continues in Europe.
This leaves the setting for Wolfenstein 3 wide open. We could see a mid-timeline story featuring BJ Blazkowicz between the events of 2 and Youngblood, or perhaps something set closer to the present day. One thing seems almost certain: this could finally be the moment we get the epic Mecha-Hitler showdown fans have been craving for years.
Wolfenstein 2 remains one of the best FPS games you can dive into today.
