Mark Hamill Reveals He Pitched a Luke, Han, and Leia Reunion to J.J. Abrams, But Was Told “It’s Not Luke’s Story Anymore”

Mark Hamill expressed his eagerness to share a scene with Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in the Star Wars sequels, even going so far as to ask director J.J. Abrams about it during the filming of The Force Awakens. Unfortunately, Abrams wasn’t on board with the idea of reuniting the original trio, citing a specific reason for his decision.

“I said, ‘Aren’t we going to have a moment where all 3 of us get together to raise the roof? It’ll only take 30 seconds,'” Hamill recounted during a recent Actor Roundtable. “And JJ said, ‘Well, Mark, it’s not Luke’s story anymore.'”

While it’s true that The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker primarily focused on Rey, Finn, and the new generation of heroes battling Kylo Ren, it seems unlikely that a brief reunion scene would have significantly disrupted the flow of the story.

If Luke, Leia, and Han had shared the screen again, it would have had to happen early on, as Ford’s iconic character met his end at the hands of Kylo Ren in Episode 7. Luke also met his fate in the 2017 sequel, sacrificing himself to protect the Resistance fighters, while Leia’s story concluded in The Rise of Skywalker.

“Working on this new movie has been as much about trying to set up elements of what is beyond what you’re seeing as it has been about telling a story that will be satisfying in and of itself,” Abrams previously stated in an interview. “But it can’t feel like a cop-out – like we’re just setting things up and not resolving them.”

The Star Wars sequel trilogy is currently available for streaming. For more updates from the galaxy far, far away, keep an eye out for news on upcoming Star Wars movies and shows.
