28 Years On: Bone Temple Director Draws Inspiration from Tifa’s Epic Fights in Advent Children for The Marvels
Final Fantasy has been a staple in gaming for decades, leaving its mark on countless other titles and media. Recently, director Nia DaCosta shared her admiration for the legendary JRPG series during an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit.
DaCosta, known for her work on 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, expressed her love for the franchise, particularly highlighting Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 as her favorites. She humorously acknowledged that her fondness for Final Fantasy 10-2 might not resonate with everyone, stating, “I never said I was a role model.”
Her enthusiasm extends to the often-maligned animated film Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, which serves as a sequel to the beloved 1997 game. DaCosta revealed that the film significantly influenced her work on the MCU project The Marvels. “Advent Children was a huge movie for me, and that fight in the church between Tifa and Loz is so epic,” she shared. “I also loved at the end everyone throwing Cloud into the sky (forget physics). During early development of The Marvels, there was a fight scene in the core of a planet where the gravity keeps shifting, and I thought the way the church fight and that sequence at the end dealt with weightlessness was great.”
The image of Tifa striking a superhero landing on a bloodied church wall is etched in her memory, and it’s easy to see why it left such a lasting impression.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is set to hit UK theaters on January 14 and US theaters on January 16.
Regarding a potential Final Fantasy film adaptation, series producer Yoshinori Kitase mentioned last year that while there are no current plans, he would “love” to see another cinematic journey in the franchise.
While a Final Fantasy 6 Remake would be a dream project for many, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake suggested he might prefer someone else to take the lead on it: “Should I be the one to undertake remaking another series?”
