Elder Scrolls Online Reveals 2026 Roadmap, Embracing Battle Passes for a Transparent Future
The Elder Scrolls Online has unveiled its ambitious 2026 roadmap, moving away from the traditional yearly expansion model to focus on enhancing the base game, albeit with the introduction of a battle pass.
Last year, the game’s director hinted at the possibility of shifting from expansions to more frequent, smaller updates, and now that vision has come to fruition. The official announcement revealed that Season 0 will launch this year, detailing the exciting plans for 2026.
Players can expect a variety of updates, including class refreshes aimed at modernizing abilities, PvP enhancements, and a host of new trials, dungeons, and quests. Notably, the roadmap also teases the addition of a Battle Pass system featuring Tamriel Tomes, though specifics about its contents remain under wraps.
The development team is set to roll out three seasons throughout 2026, integrating older DLCs like Greymoor, Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, and Imperial City into the base game alongside the new offerings.
The team emphasized that this commitment to enhancing the base game, maintaining transparency, and valuing player feedback is a long-term strategy, not just a temporary shift. They believe that collaborating with the community will help shape the next decade of ESO into its best era yet.
While these updates sound promising, there’s a sense of caution given the recent changes at ZeniMax Online under Microsoft. The abrupt cancellation of Project Blackbird, a Destiny-style MMO shooter, during recent layoffs raises questions about Microsoft’s perspective on the future of Elder Scrolls Online.
It’s possible that the developers genuinely want to move away from the expansion model, but the backdrop of layoffs suggests they might be pivoting to a new monetization strategy to sustain the game.
Fable will receive its “first deep dive” alongside gameplay from Forza Horizon 6 and more during the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct this month.
