Tom Cruise directed a lightsaber duel for Star Wars Starfighter, adding his touch to the film.

Filming for Star Wars: Starfighter is in full swing, and while superstar Tom Cruise isn’t part of the cast, he did lend a hand behind the scenes by filming a pivotal scene.

In a chat with an outlet, director Shawn Levy shared how Cruise’s visit turned into an unexpected moment of creativity. The actor grabbed a camera to film a segment of a lightsaber duel, even wading into a pond to get the perfect shot.

“Last week, Steven Spielberg was here. And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes,” Levy joked, noting that he playfully suggested Cruise take on the cameraman role. “Now when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom. I mean, how cool is that?”

Set in a largely unexplored period of the Star Wars timeline, Starfighter centers on Ryan Gosling’s character, a starfighter pilot. Fans can look forward to at least one lightsaber duel, a hallmark of the beloved sci-fi saga.

Levy has previously mentioned that Return of the Jedi, the concluding film of the original trilogy, served as a major inspiration for Starfighter. This classic features some of the most thrilling lightsaber battles in the franchise, particularly during Luke Skywalker’s daring infiltration of Jabba the Hutt’s palace and his intense duel with Darth Vader.

Star Wars: Starfighter is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2027. In the meantime, keep an eye out for all the exciting upcoming Star Wars movies and shows currently in development.
