A Guide to Finding Gyroids and Gyroid Fragments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduces Gyroids, quirky collectibles that can add a unique rhythm and charm to your island. These whimsical instruments begin as Gyroid Fragments, and it’s your job to nurture them into lively characters.

As with previous entries in the series, there are some fun methods to acquire Gyroids in their various forms. With 35 different types to collect, you’re in for an enjoyable challenge with delightful rewards. Here’s how to find and grow Gyroids in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, from Aluminoid to Whistloid.

Before Gyroid fragments start appearing on your island, you’ll need to complete a few tasks. First, chat with Blathers at the museum. He’ll share his plans to add a café and mention his friend Brewster. To unlock Gyroids, you’ll need to locate Brewster, which requires a trip to a remote island with Kapp’n.

Head to the pier and hop on a boat with Kapp’n. Keep in mind that you can only take one tour per day, so if you’ve already sailed, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to continue your Gyroid quest. The tour costs 1000 Nook Miles, and the island you visit after speaking with Blathers is special.

On this island, you’ll meet Brewster, the coffee-loving pigeon, who is key to unlocking The Roost. More importantly, you’ll find your first Gyroid fragment here. Look for a digging spot in the ground, similar to fossil hunting, and dig it up to collect your first fragment. Once you have it, return to your island and follow these steps.

Start by digging a small hole, just like you would for planting trees or bushes. Then, access your inventory, select the Gyroid fragment, and choose the ‘Bury in Hole’ option to plant it.

The next step is crucial: you must water it. Just like a peculiar musical flower, if you skip this step, you won’t get a Gyroid the next day. If done correctly, you’ll see strange smoke rising from the spot, signaling that it’s safe to leave it alone.

The following day, you can dig up a fully formed Gyroid from that spot and kick off your collection. After your first Gyroid from Brewster, you’ll start finding more fragments at dig sites on your island after it rains or snows.

You can also discover Gyroid fragments during boat tours with Kapp’n, so always carry a shovel.

Customization is available for Gyroids, just like many other items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Grab a customization kit—only one is needed for each color change—and head to your workbench. You can choose from about five color options for each Gyroid.

We’ll keep updating this guide as we uncover all the different Gyroids in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. So far, there are 39 types in the series, ranging from Alloids to Warbloid, each producing unique sounds and movements that you can mix and match.
