Obsidian’s Avowed Arrives on PS5, Introducing Non-Human Character Options After a Yearlong Wait
Multiplatform support is clearly the way forward for Xbox’s first-party studios, and Obsidian is no exception to this trend. The developers have officially announced that Avowed will be making its way to PS5, along with some exciting details about an upcoming anniversary update. One of the standout features is the introduction of non-human characters for players to choose from.
Avowed is set to launch on PS5 on February 17, coinciding almost perfectly with the one-year anniversary of its original release. This date will also mark the arrival of a significant free anniversary update that will roll out across all platforms, including Xbox, PC, and PS5, bringing a wealth of new features.
This announcement came during the New Game+ showcase, where the developers provided insights into the anniversary update. They touched on some previously revealed features like new game plus and photo mode, but the highlight is undoubtedly the addition of non-human character options. Players will now have the chance to create characters as aumauan, orlan, or dwarf.
In the showcase video, lead character artist Dmitri Berman shared that the idea of multiple playable races was considered early in Avowed’s development. However, he noted the complexity involved in implementing this feature, especially given the game’s parkour mechanics, combat systems, and diverse weapon types. Each race presents unique challenges due to their varying sizes and shapes, which significantly alters the gameplay experience in a first-person perspective. While time constraints prevented the inclusion of these options during the initial development, the team is now excited to deliver this feature to players.
Although Avowed may not have received as much attention in 2025, it’s definitely worth exploring if you missed it. While it may not reach the narrative depth of some of Obsidian’s classic titles, it compensates with outstanding first-person combat and richly detailed open-world environments filled with opportunities for exploration. It’s no wonder it was recognized as one of the best games of 2025.
