Avowed, the Hidden Gem RPG of 2025, Set to Launch on PS5 with Major Enhancements

Avowed has quietly emerged as one of the standout RPGs of 2025, even earning a spot on a notable best games list. Until now, it was one of the last remaining titles exclusive to Xbox Series X/S, but that’s about to change. Obsidian Entertainment has confirmed that this Skyrim-like adventure will launch on PlayStation 5 on February 17, accompanied by a significant anniversary update for all platforms.

While titles like Forza Horizon and Gears of War made their way to PS5 in 2025, Avowed stood out as a unique holdout amid Microsoft’s shift towards multiplatform releases. Now, it will join Obsidian’s other RPG for 2025, The Outer Worlds 2, on Sony’s console, allowing a much larger audience to experience it. The announcement came during a developer interview at the New Game+ Showcase.

Obsidian also shared details about the upcoming major update. Players can look forward to a photo mode and a new game plus mode, which will introduce new character races, including dwarves, and an additional weapon type. The new game plus mode will reset players’ levels to one while allowing them to retain all their gear from the previous playthrough, along with the chance to explore new enemy modifiers. The addition of new races was a significant challenge for the team.

“It’s a lot of work and a difficult thing to really nail down, especially in Avowed with its parkour systems and combat mechanics, along with all the weapon types in the game,” Dimitri Berman explained in the interview. “Our different races vary in size and shape, providing a unique gameplay experience when playing as each one in a first-person perspective. So it was something new to tackle for Avowed.”

While the gameplay is reminiscent of The Elder Scrolls series, it unfolds within the fantasy universe established by the Pillars of Eternity games. The first installment is also receiving a major update to introduce a turn-based mode. It remains to be seen if Obsidian has plans for a potential Pillars 3 that could blend the best elements of both franchises.
