New Joy-Con Colors Reveal a Surprising Flaw in the Switch 2

Seven months after launching its new portable console, Nintendo is finally revealing fresh color options for its Joy-Con 2 controllers. Get ready for the light purple and green variants, available for $99.99. While these new colors won’t hit the shelves until February 12, fans might want to reconsider pre-ordering.

The steep price tag could lead many to stick with their existing Switch Joy-Con. Unlike the original Switch, the Joy-Con 2 features only a hint of color on the inside, giving them a sleek, modern vibe. However, this design choice highlights a surprising drawback for the Switch 2: when attached to the console, the vibrant colors are mostly hidden. Instead of showcasing bold hues, players will only catch a glimpse of the new colors when the console is docked or used in handheld mode.

There are still chances to enjoy the novelty of the purple and green controllers, especially during multiplayer sessions when the Joy-Con are used separately. If you prefer propping up the Switch 2’s screen with the Joy-Con detached, you’ll get to appreciate the new look even more. However, most players will likely keep the Joy-Con 2 attached to the console, raising the question: is it worth over $100, taxes included, just for a hint of color?

This issue has been present since the summer of 2025, as the original Red/Blue Joy-Con 2 also conceal their bright colors during regular gameplay. But with the introduction of more Joy-Con 2 options, this detail feels more pronounced. It’s a bit disappointing, too. The Switch 2’s more uniform appearance may not foster the same Joy-Con collecting culture that thrived with its predecessor. For the original Switch, Joy-Con were a way to express individuality, and I enjoyed collecting unique colors and mixing different combinations. Now, the muted design and hefty price tag make me feel less inclined to expand my Joy-Con collection.

Nonetheless, if you’re in the market for a hint of variety or need a replacement for a broken Joy-Con 2, the light green and light purple set is available for pre-order now.
