Ex-Assassin’s Creed Director: Creative Constraints Fuel Great Game Development

Alexandre Amancio, the former creative director behind Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Unity, emphasizes that “mastery and excellence” thrive within constraints. He believes that clearly defined limitations enable studios to collaborate more effectively with external teams.

In a recent discussion, Amancio shared his vision for the future of high-budget games, advocating for smaller core teams supplemented by co-studios or outsourced development tasks. However, he cautions that without careful oversight, this approach can result in a disjointed final product.

Amancio highlights the importance of constraints in this development model. “I prefer to be very clear about the constraints: what the shape of the box is, if you will,” he explains. “Once that’s established, teams can explore freely within those boundaries.”

He argues that constraints not only guide external teams but also enhance the quality of ideas within a project. “I believe constraints are the secret behind any good art,” he states. “Whether they’re artificial or genuine, they need to be set. Our brains are wired similarly, so given the same inputs, we tend to generate similar ideas.”

While he acknowledges the value of ideas, Amancio insists that most people arrive at the same solutions for common challenges. It’s the constraints that push creators to move beyond their initial thoughts. “Sometimes it’s financial or technical limitations, but those challenges compel you to discover something unique, and that’s where mastery and excellence emerge.”

This perspective resonates strongly. Consider the minimalist 1-bit art style of Obra Dinn or the clever puzzles that arise from the lack of a jump mechanic in the often-overlooked Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker. Constraints can indeed inspire remarkable gaming experiences.
