“Silent Hill: More Than a Location—Writer Explores Controversial Theory from A Short Message”

Ryukishi07, the writer behind Silent Hill f, shared insights from series producer Motoi Okamoto, who clarified that Silent Hill is more of a phenomenon than just a town, especially when discussing its setting in Japan. This aligns with the divisive theory introduced in Silent Hill: The Short Message.

Originally, the Silent Hill series was rooted in the American town of the same name, but it has since ventured far beyond those confines with recent titles. The revival of Silent Hill has been a rollercoaster for fans, swinging from the lows of The Short Message and Ascension to the highs of the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f.

While the name Silent Hill is derived from the town, the series primarily explores the otherworld—a supernatural realm that mirrors the inner turmoil of its characters. Throughout various games, players encounter notes suggesting that the otherworld is perceived as a disease, though this concept hasn’t always aligned with the gameplay experience.

As the acclaimed creator of the Japanese horror series When They Cry, Ryukishi07 was approached to lend his talents to the first Silent Hill game set in Japan. In a translated interview, he recounted his discussions with Okamoto, questioning how a game named after an American town could take place in his homeland.

“I had many conversations with Okamoto after I was invited to write Silent Hill f,” Ryukishi07 reflected. “I asked, ‘Why is it set in Japan?’ and ‘What is Silent Hill, really?’ Ultimately, we concluded that Silent Hill is not merely a location; it’s a phenomenon. I believe I was able to establish a compelling foundation for the story and world from this perspective.”

This concept was first articulated in The Short Message, where a note describes the otherworld as the “Silent Hill Phenomenon,” referencing a similar occurrence in the U.S. town. With the new installment set in Germany, it’s clear that there’s a desire to broaden the Silent Hill universe beyond its original tourist town roots.

Much of the Silent Hill narrative invites player interpretation, and this idea is no exception. While some fans may not fully embrace this explanation, they seem to share a collective excitement about the series expanding its horizons beyond the U.S.

After the successful releases of the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f, there are plans to deliver “about one title per year” in this beloved horror franchise.
