Nintendo Promotes Mario Toys Featuring a Mom with an Incredible Thumb Story
Nintendo, a powerhouse raking in billions annually, could have easily organized a professional photoshoot to showcase its upcoming My Mario toy line set to hit stores in New York City and San Francisco this February. However, it seems they might have opted for generative AI instead. This speculation arises from the images circulating of parents engaging with their kids and the Mario toys.
I’ll admit, the AI debate has spiraled out of control, and as I examined these supposed AI-generated images, I found myself questioning their authenticity. Perhaps some people’s hands and fingers genuinely look like that, or maybe my growing anxiety about AI art has skewed my perception of reality. Is it really possible for a thumb to bend that way, or for a child’s hand to squish into their parent’s as depicted?
While writing this, I caught myself glancing at my own hands multiple times, trying to ground myself in what hands actually look like. I even wondered if a woman’s fingers appearing nearly twice the length of her palms while holding a tablet was beyond the realm of possibility. With my small hands, I might not be the best judge.
Regardless, fans have jumped on the theory that these images are AI-generated, voicing their thoughts in response to Nintendo’s social media posts.
Introducing My Mario, a collection of products, games, and experiences inspired by Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom friends, designed for young children and their parents. Select My Mario products will be available at Nintendo NEW YORK and Nintendo SAN FRANCISCO on Feb 19.
People’s eagerness to point out potential AI involvement has made me hesitant to label something as AI-generated unless it’s glaringly obvious, as many genuine works of art and photography have been unfairly dismissed in this ongoing debate. When in doubt, it’s best to go straight to the source. We’ve reached out to Nintendo for clarification on this matter and will provide an update if we receive a response.
