Divinity will feature co-op gameplay at launch, with player count determined by the party size, while mod support may allow for even more players.

We already knew that Divinity would allow players to team up with friends (or anyone, really), but developer Larian Studios has provided more details on the co-op feature. It will be available right from launch, and there won’t be a strict limit on the number of players who can join in, thanks to the team’s support for modding.

During a recent AMA on Reddit about the upcoming game, Larian Studios’ technical director Bert van Semmertier confirmed that “yes, co-op will be available for release.” While Baldur’s Gate 3 had a cap of two to four players for co-op, the team hasn’t imposed a limit for Divinity’s multiplayer experience.

“The number of players playing together will depend on the final party size,” van Semmertier explained. “But since modding is planned for this project as well, players will essentially be free to extend this. There is no hard limit to the number of co-op players.”

So, co-op is set for day one, and mod support is also on the table, though the timeline for that is still uncertain. Larian isn’t even sure what the final party size will be, but that will determine how many co-op players the game officially supports before mods potentially expand that limit.

The only potential hiccup is that Larian is likely considering an early access approach for Divinity. Whether co-op will be included in the early access version or saved for the full launch remains to be seen.

In related news, the director of Baldur’s Gate 3 has reversed the decision on using AI art in Divinity, stating, “We’ve decided to refrain from using genAI tools during concept art development.”
