Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Clarifies Why Switch 2 Port Is Absent: ‘It Wasn’t Our Choice’

Baldur’s Gate 3 would be a fantastic addition to the Switch 2. With the new Joy-Con 2 controllers offering mouse controls, Larian’s acclaimed RPG seems like a perfect match for the console’s point-and-click mechanics. It appears that the studio was eager to bring characters like Gale, Astarion, and Shadowheart to Nintendo’s platform, but something stood in the way. The exact reason remains unclear.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Larian CEO Swen Vincke was asked about the possibility of Baldur’s Gate 3 making its way to the Switch 2. Given that the game runs smoothly on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, it’s a valid inquiry, especially considering the game’s complexity could potentially overwhelm the Switch 2. However, it seems Larian didn’t have the final say in the matter.

“We would have loved to, but it wasn’t our decision to make,” Vincke stated in his response.

While he didn’t elaborate further, it’s likely that Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, the owners of the Dungeons & Dragons IP, could have complicated any porting efforts. They seem to hold the authority to prevent Larian from pursuing this option. Nintendo could also be a factor, but it’s hard to believe the company wouldn’t want a critically acclaimed title on its new system.

That said, the hope for a Switch 2 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t entirely dashed. Wizards could potentially enlist a third-party developer to handle the port, but it’s doubtful Vincke would have commented if a Switch 2 edition were already in development. Whoever made this decision may have missed an opportunity, and there’s still a chance to change course.
