The Mummy’s First Trailer Unveils Its Unusual New Undead Creature

The first trailer for Lee Cronin’s fresh take on The Mummy has dropped, showcasing a narrative that diverges significantly from the Brendan Fraser-led adventure series. This version leans heavily into horror, drawing inspiration from contemporary genre trends. The story echoes elements from the recent hit Bring Her Back, reimagining the Mummy as a young girl.

The trailer reveals a chilling premise: “The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.”

There are clear parallels to Bring Her Back, which centers on a desperate mother using dark magic to bring her daughter back to life. This iteration adds an Egyptian twist, tapping into the rich mythology surrounding ancient mummies.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (the full title) is not connected to the beloved Brendan Fraser/Rachel Weisz films, which are also seeing a revival with a new sequel. This marks the second attempt to reboot The Mummy as a horror-centric franchise in the past decade, following the 2017 remake featuring Tom Cruise that didn’t quite hit the mark.

Both films reference the original 1932 version of The Mummy, a classic in the Universal horror lineup alongside Dracula, the Wolfman, and the Gill-man from The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

However, Cronin’s film has stirred some controversy, with reports of producer and horror veteran James Wan walking out of an advance screening. Coupled with some uncertainty regarding the title, there are reasons for cautious optimism about the film.

We’ll find out more when it hits theaters on April 17. Stay tuned for updates on all the upcoming horror films you won’t want to miss.
