The Division 3: Key Details About Ubisoft’s Upcoming Shooter
Ubisoft’s The Division series is hitting a milestone this year, celebrating its 10th anniversary, and there are several new titles in development, including The Division 3. Although the game was announced back in 2023 with minimal fanfare, more information has started to trickle out. Here’s what we know so far about the next chapter in this beloved online shooter franchise.
As for the release date, Ubisoft hasn’t provided any specifics for The Division 3, not even a target year. While we can expect more clarity on this front eventually, it’s still uncertain when that will be. The announcement in 2023 indicated that Ubisoft was “actively building a team” for the game, hinting that the reveal might have been more about attracting talent than showcasing a fully fleshed-out project. It’s not uncommon for studios to announce games early to pique interest and recruit developers.
The development of The Division 3 is being spearheaded by Massive Entertainment, the same studio behind the original The Division and its sequel. This team also worked on Star Wars: Outlaws. Ubisoft typically collaborates across its network of studios for major titles, and it seems The Division 3 will follow suit. The phrasing in the announcement suggests that while Massive is leading the charge, other studios will likely contribute as well. Julian Gerighty, who co-directed the first two games, is now the executive producer for the entire franchise, tasked with steering The Division series in a cohesive direction, which includes The Division 3 and the mobile title, The Division Resurgence. He was also overseeing the now-canceled free-to-play game, The Division: Heartland.
During a recent showcase, Gerighty described The Division 3 as “shaping up to be a monster,” expressing confidence that it will have “as big an impact” as the original game. While he didn’t provide further details, such bold statements are often made to generate excitement.
Currently, there’s no trailer available for The Division 3, and Ubisoft has yet to announce the platforms for its release. However, it’s anticipated to be a multiplatform title, likely available on both PC and consoles. Preorders are not open yet, either.
As for the story, setting, and characters, Ubisoft hasn’t revealed any specifics about The Division 3. The first game was set in a near-future New York City grappling with the aftermath of a pandemic, where players banded together to rebuild and uncover the truth behind the virus. The sequel shifted the action to Washington, D.C., but details about the setting for the third installment remain under wraps.
In addition, there was once talk of a movie adaptation based on The Division, but updates on that project have been scarce. This is typical in Hollywood, where many projects can take years to come to fruition. A decade ago, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain were rumored for leading roles, and at one point, David Leitch, known for John Wick, was attached to direct. More recent rumors suggest that Rawson Marshall Thurber, director of Skyscraper, may now be at the helm.
