Gamer Plans to Remove AI-Created Game from Steam After Girlfriend’s Persuasion Against AI

An indie developer behind a roguelike card game that debuted in 2025 has announced plans to remove the game from Steam after a recent conversation with his girlfriend led him to view it as a “disgrace to all game makers.”

On January 10, the Steam page for the indie card game revealed an unexpected update. Developer Eero Laine stated that he would be taking the game down entirely on January 30. He explained that the game was created in the summer of 2025 using free tools from his university, and he initially overlooked the broader implications of AI technology on employment and the environment. The game, which launched in July 2025, is free to play.

“I made [the game] over a couple of months during the summer and thought using AI was a good idea because the university promotes it and provides all the tools for free, allowing me to generate unlimited images,” Laine shared in a post titled AI Is Bad. “However, I’ve come to understand that AI isn’t truly free and has significant impacts on the economy and environment. Some AI companies might use the existence of this game to attract more investment, benefiting no one and draining resources from hardworking individuals.”

Laine mentioned that he coded “everything” himself in the game, and he plans to create a new project with “real assets” using his previous non-AI code. He concluded his update with, “But the game existing in its current form is a disgrace to all game makers and players. The only ethical choice is to remove it from Steam. My girlfriend helped me realize this.”

While it’s hard to say for certain, this might be the first instance of a game being pulled from Steam due to a partner’s influence regarding its quality. It’s a tough call, but in the realm of AI-generated content, it rings true. Kudos to her for prompting this change, and here’s hoping Laine’s next game is a standout, free from the pitfalls of AI-generated art.
