The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Mod Offers a Glimpse of a Lost Experience

The Last of Us Part II might soon see a multiplayer mod in the works. Modder Speclizer recently shared some test gameplay featuring two Ellies frolicking through a field. While the mod is still in its early stages, and the Ellies can currently only run around and hang out, it’s already sparking interest among fans eager for a true multiplayer experience.

The goal of the mod is to introduce PvP combat to TLOU2, but it won’t include multiplayer for the story mode or any NPC interactions. Speclizer has hinted that this project is exploratory and may not reach completion. It could evolve into the unofficial online mode that fans have been hoping for, or it might just become another unfinished fan endeavor.

Many players are still feeling the loss of The Last of Us Online, the official multiplayer spinoff that was scrapped two years ago. The cancellation of this project, which fans referred to as Factions based on the original game’s multiplayer, was made to focus on future single-player titles, including the upcoming Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Speclizer’s mod offers a glimpse into what might have been.

In addition to the multiplayer mod, Speclizer has created other mods for The Last of Us Part II, including a battle mode that lets players craft their own encounters, a “Spare or Kill” ending allowing players to choose to eliminate Abby, restorations of cut features like an alternative Listen Mode, and a dog companion mod. Speclizer has even modded God of War to make Kratos enormous.

While the latest mod may not boast extensive features or a guarantee of completion, it represents a significant advancement in the TLOU2 modding scene. It could lay the foundation for future multiplayer mods or inspire further development. Who knows, perhaps The Last of Us Online will eventually come to life as a fully fan-made project.
