The upcoming Mummy reboot promises to be genuinely frightening.
A fresh teaser trailer for *The Mummy* has just dropped, and if you’re wondering why Tom Cruise or Brendan Fraser aren’t involved (especially after Fraser’s return to his iconic role from 1999), there’s a solid explanation. Director Lee Cronin, known for *Evil Dead Rise* and *The Hole in the Ground*, is bringing his own vision to the franchise, officially titled *Lee Cronin’s The Mummy*.
This film, produced by New Line Cinema rather than Universal, leans heavily into horror rather than adventure. It tells the chilling story of a family whose daughter vanishes, only to reappear eight years later with eerie connections to the undead and ancient Egyptian lore. While the teaser doesn’t reveal much in terms of plot specifics, it effectively establishes a haunting atmosphere. We see a young woman being unearthed from a sarcophagus, and it seems that disturbing her resting place has unleashed a supernatural force, with Katie becoming its unwitting host.
Filming kicked off in early 2025, featuring Jack Reynor and Laia Costa in lead roles, alongside Verónica Falcón, May Calamawy from *Moon Knight*, May Elghety, and Natalie Grace.
Cronin shared that one of his main objectives is to explore the dark rituals and mysteries surrounding mummification, drawing inspiration from *Se7en*, while also embedding the narrative within a *Poltergeist*-like family dynamic. “I’m an Amblin kid, a child of Spielberg, no doubt. I was massively influenced by that. So when I talk about *Poltergeist*, I mean the domestic circumstances and the warmth of the family. And when I mention *Se7en*, I refer to the dark, investigative angle and the secrets lurking beneath. These are two aspects from different realms that I love, and I’m trying to merge them together.”
*Lee Cronin’s The Mummy* is set to stagger into theaters on April 17.
