Theta Labs Joins Forces with PlayVS for College Esports League

PlayVS, a company focused on scholastic and collegiate esports, has teamed up with Theta Labs to introduce a tailored AI agent for its North American collegiate esports league, the PlayVS College League (PCL).

The financial details of this partnership remain under wraps.

Set to debut in the upcoming Spring season of the PCL, the PCL Bot will be “trained and deployed on Theta EdgeCloud’s distributed GPU infrastructure.” This AI agent will be available to assist thousands of students in the PCL community by answering questions about the league and providing competition information. Players and fans can access the bot through Discord and the PCL website throughout the collegiate season.

According to PlayVS, the introduction of this AI agent will allow the PCL team to manage community inquiries more efficiently and seamlessly. The bot will provide information on match schedules, opponent matchups, league rules, code of conduct, and dispute resolution for college players competing in the PCL. Additionally, it will help users understand how their colleges can apply for PCL membership, outline eligibility requirements, and highlight member benefits.

“This conversational AI agent embodies the intelligent, responsive technology that collegiate esports needs,” stated Theta Labs CEO Mitch Liu. “Students will receive instant information instead of waiting for responses in Discord DMs. We’re seeing EdgeCloud become the preferred platform for gaming teams, players, and leagues looking to create an always-on fan experience, and PCL exemplifies how AI can streamline operations for everyone involved.”

PlayVS joins a growing list of esports organizations utilizing AI agents powered by Theta’s technology, including Method, 100 Thieves, Dignitas, Gen.G Esports, Cloud9, FlyQuest, NRG, and Evil Geniuses. The company also collaborates with content creators like YoBoyRoy and NHL teams such as the Las Vegas Knights and New Jersey Devils, as well as several top universities in South Korea. Financial backing comes from major players like Samsung, Sony, Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments, and Creative Artists Agency.

Launched in July 2025, the PCL aims to serve collegiate esports players across North America. Organizers report that the league has secured partnerships with over 1,000 campuses for the 2025–2026 season. This league emerged following PlayVS’s acquisition of PlayFly Esports and Generation Esports in April; Generation Esports previously managed the High School Esports League (HSEL) and Middle School Esports League (MSEL), while PlayFly Esports was the collegiate esports division of Playfly.
