Understanding Persuasion Mechanics in Divinity: Original Sin 2

Persuasion in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a unique stat that plays a crucial role in dialogue interactions, affecting both charisma checks and how NPCs perceive you from the get-go. However, when you encounter Persuasion checks during conversations, the mechanics can be a bit confusing, especially since they sometimes reference unrelated skills like “Finesse Persuasion” or “Constitution Persuasion.” Here’s a breakdown of how this dialogue system operates and how to leverage it effectively.

In DOS2, Persuasion comes into play during specific dialogue encounters. When presented with an option labeled as [[ATTRIBUTE] Persuasion], there’s an unknown threshold you need to meet. If multiple Persuasion options are available, always opt for the one linked to your highest Attribute!

For instance, if you have the choice between Strength, Finesse, and Wits Persuasion, and your Wits is the highest, go with that! The game adds your chosen Attribute to your Persuasion score, and if it meets the target for that charisma check, you succeed! This means that even if your overall Persuasion score is low, a high score in the selected Attribute can still help you pass. Additionally, having a strong Persuasion stat boosts your baseline reputation with NPCs, making them more likely to overlook your misdeeds or offer better trade deals.

If you plan to build a character with high Persuasion, it’s wise to make that character your main one—the one you control most frequently and who will handle most conversations. If you’ve chosen the Red Prince as your Origin character, you’ll benefit from a starting +1 to Persuasion, giving you an edge right from the start!
