Several Game Studios Under Meta Experience Job Cuts

Developers from two of Meta’s virtual reality game studios have taken to social media to announce significant layoffs, raising concerns about the potential closure of these studios.

On January 13, several team members from Twisted Pixel and Sanzaru Games shared that they had been let go. Many of those affected hinted that both studios, along with others under the umbrella of the company formerly known as Facebook, could be facing complete shutdowns. Meta has yet to provide any confirmation regarding these developments.

“Welp. As many will hear soon, several Meta game studios were closed today, including Sanzaru. It was an amazing team of powerhouse talent, and I’m really glad to have gotten to know everyone there,” senior designer Ray West posted on LinkedIn.

“I’ve just been laid off. It appears the entire Twisted Pixel games studio has been shut down. Sanzaru Games, too,” another developer tweeted.

This news comes on the heels of reports indicating that Meta is shifting its focus away from VR and the metaverse towards AI and augmented reality technologies, following a $4 billion loss in that segment. The company is reportedly aiming to reduce its VR workforce by 10% to 15%, which could affect around 15,000 employees.
