Deadpool Stays True to Form in Marvel Rivals
Deadpool’s introduction in Marvel Rivals shakes things up in a way that sets him apart from the rest of the roster. Unlike the other characters, he doesn’t neatly fit into the categories of Dualist, Strategist, or Vanguard; he embodies elements of all three, depending on the situation at hand.
Ahead of his arrival on January 16, a new trailer showcases how Deadpool’s versatile role functions. Players can only have one version of Deadpool on their team at a time, meaning if you’re rocking him as a Vanguard, no one else can pick him as a Strategist. While the trailer doesn’t clarify how or when you can switch his roles, it does hint at another intriguing aspect of his abilities: throughout the match, you can level up his skills. It’s still a bit murky whether this enhances their power or simply unlocks new capabilities.
What stands out is Deadpool’s combat style. Regardless of his chosen role, he wields dual katanas for melee and dual pistols for ranged attacks, offering a refreshing twist for Vanguards. Unlike ranged Vanguards like Peni Parker and Doctor Strange, who lack melee options, or melee characters like Angela, who struggle against distant foes, Deadpool brings a balanced approach. Plus, he seems to have the ability to boost his attack speed, injecting some unpredictability into the typically slower pace of Rivals’ battles.
As a Strategist, Deadpool’s ranged shots and sword strikes also provide healing. However, based on the trailer, it appears he doesn’t have the more complex abilities seen in characters like Gambit, who can hinder enemy healing while enhancing it for allies.
Deadpool’s launch coincides with season 6 of Marvel Rivals, themed “Night at the Museum.” Alongside him, players can explore a new convoy map, the Museum of Contemplation, which is also featured in the trailer.
