The Boy and the Beast Set for Upcoming 4K Blu-ray Release

Anime enthusiasts eager to expand their collection of Mamoru Hosoda-directed steelbooks have something to look forward to: The Boy and the Beast is set for a new 4K Blu-ray release later this year. Priced at $37 for the 4K edition and $27 for the standard Blu-ray, this film weaves a heartfelt narrative about a master and his apprentice who learn from one another while facing a looming threat. This release will be available exclusively on Amazon.

Originally launched in 2015, The Boy and the Beast follows Kyuta, a young boy navigating the streets of Shibuya, who is taken under the wing of Kumatetsu, a rugged warrior from the Beast Kingdom in search of a disciple. Despite their contrasting personalities and frequent squabbles, the two quickly form a bond during their training sessions. When a malevolent force emerges, their relationship is put to the ultimate test as the fate of their world hangs in the balance. The film was a box-office success and marked the second project from Hosoda’s animation studio, Studio Chizu.

Many of Hosoda’s other films have recently received 4K steelbook editions, making it a great time to explore beautifully crafted anime that combines emotional depth with fantasy elements. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which catapulted Hosoda into the spotlight with its compelling tale of time travel and teenage struggles, is currently available for $34 (down from $37). Summer Wars, a 2009 film that delves into rogue AI and fabricated relationships, and Wolf Children, a poignant story about motherhood and loss, are also part of his impressive filmography. Wolf Children follows Hana, who falls in love with a werewolf, gives birth to two half-wolf children, and faces the challenges of raising them alone after her husband’s tragic passing.

After The Boy and the Beast, Hosoda continued to create remarkable films, including Mirai and Belle, with his latest release, the medieval fantasy epic Scarlet, debuting in November 2025.
