Understanding Hytale Memories

One of the key progression systems in Hytale, at least in its early access phase, is the Memories feature. Think of it as a bestiary that logs every creature you encounter during your adventures, from friendly farm animals to bizarre floating eyeballs.

However, you won’t be able to access Memories right off the bat. If you’ve noticed the prompt in your inventory screen about ‘finding the Forgotten Temple,’ that’s your gateway to unlocking this feature. Since it relies on exploration, it’s a good idea to get this system up and running as soon as possible. Here’s how to do it.

To unlock the Memory system, you need to locate the Forgotten Temple. There are several scattered across the map, but typically, there’s one close to your starting point, marked with a portal icon on your map.

Once you find the temple, head inside and take the stairs down behind the altar. You’ll encounter an earthen golem guarding a portal. This golem is manageable with copper weapons and armor, but if you’re not equipped, you can simply dash past it and jump into the portal. Keep in mind that the golem respawns every time you return to the Forgotten Temple, so you’ll get used to sidestepping it.

Step through the blue portal, and you’ll arrive at the Edge of the Echo, a serene temple that feels like paradise. Move straight ahead, and you’ll discover a totem that you can interact with to unlock the Memories mechanic.

Once you’ve activated Memories in the Forgotten Temple, any creature you encounter will be marked as discovered. You’ll receive a notification in the bottom right corner when you’re close enough to a new mob, whether it’s friendly or hostile. Just remember, this feature isn’t retroactive, so your Memories log will start off empty, even if you’ve already seen some creatures.

Currently, there are 240 entries to collect, but your first task should be to explore the Forgotten Temple area, as there are plenty of animals nearby, including birds, fish, and deer, to help you get a head start.

Keep in mind that discovered Memory entries aren’t automatically recorded at the totem. This means you’ll need to return to the Forgotten Temple periodically to add your latest discoveries to your collection.

Each creature you find adds to your overall collection, which is great, but I know you’re really in it for the rewards. At the start of early access, there are five key Memory milestones to achieve, each offering a unique set of rewards, including new eternal seeds, decorative chests, and a useful backpack upgrade.
