Remember to upgrade your backpack in Hytale for an extra nine slots to stash all your loot!

Even if you’ve spent countless hours in other blocky survival games, the variety of items in Hytale will still leave you amazed, even with the familiar mechanics.

If you’re anything like me, your instinct will be to start collecting everything you come across, quickly filling up your inventory. That’s where the backpack upgrade comes into play, allowing you to expand your inventory space.

You might have noticed a small prompt about the backpack upgrade next to your character in the inventory, but figuring out how to obtain and use it can be confusing. I’ll break it down for you, as the process isn’t immediately clear after you craft the upgrade.

To unlock the backpack, you need to craft the upgrade in the ‘tinkering’ section of the Workbench. For this, you’ll need:

Iron, which can be found in deep caves across all biomes, including the starting Emerald Wilds area, and medium hide from predators like wolves, which can be converted into leather at a Tanning Rack.

Once you reach Workbench Tier 3, you can create Backpack Upgrade 1 using 40 cindercloth scraps, 24 heavy leather, and eight cobalt ingots, further boosting your inventory size. You can then unlock Backpack Upgrade 2 by restoring 100 Memories.

Keep in mind that crafting the backpack doesn’t give you the item immediately; it’s a consumable that you need to use. Right-click while holding the crafted item, and you’ll see a message stating, ‘your backpack capacity has now increased to nine’ in the bottom left corner.

This means you can now click the backpack icon next to your character in the inventory screen to access a smaller stash, your backpack. Since it takes a bit longer to access than your main inventory, I suggest using it for items you don’t need right away, like extra blocks or spare tools.

Excluding your hotbar, the main inventory can hold up to 36 different item stacks, which fills up quickly. With the backpack, you’ll have a total of 45 slots, making it a solid upgrade for your adventures.
