Rockstar Removes ‘Charlie Kirk’ from User-Created GTA Online Missions

Rockstar Games is in a constant battle with creators in Grand Theft Auto Online, especially after the introduction of a new mission creator feature last December. Players have been using this tool to recreate the assassination of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, who was 31, was shot and killed on September 10 of last year during a public event at Utah Valley University. He was known for co-founding Turning Point USA, an organization that promotes conservative values among students. Following his death, several individuals who commented or joked about the incident faced backlash, including a talk show host whose program was threatened with cancellation. After public outcry, the network reversed its decision.

Despite the passage of time, Kirk’s assassination remains a topic of interest. The creators of GTA Online have a history of embracing controversy, and the franchise often finds itself at the center of discussions about violence. However, Rockstar is now focused on eliminating any references to Kirk’s assassination from the game.

This move comes after weeks of players crafting missions that reference Kirk’s murder. One notable example surfaced on January 12, where a user shared a clip of a mission titled “We Are Charlie Kirk.” In this mission, a player, positioned on a rooftop with a sniper rifle, is tasked with “killing the Actor” in a setting designed to resemble a college campus. The mission concludes only after the character, presumed to be Kirk, is eliminated.

In response to these missions, Rockstar has implemented measures to delete and ban any references to Kirk through its profanity filters. While these filters typically target slurs and explicit language, reports indicate that Rockstar plans to adjust the tool to flag a broader range of content, including references to real-world events.

Players have been attempting to bypass these filters by creatively altering the names or using different languages. One such mission has been highlighted in discussions.

It remains to be seen whether Rockstar will effectively curb the creation of these controversial missions. The internet is filled with inventive minds, and restrictions often lead to increased interest in the very things they aim to suppress. What’s evident is that Kirk’s assassination continues to spark conversation, both in political discourse and through user-generated content in one of gaming’s most beloved franchises.
