Star Wars Fans Clash Over Disney’s Choices for the Saga

Star Wars enthusiasts are buzzing about some of the most significant “abandoned” plotlines in the franchise, with a certain beloved green character at the center of the discussion.

This conversation kicked off on a fan subreddit, where many pointed to The Mandalorian and a scrapped storyline that could have explored Mando’s journey apart from Grogu. One of the top comments expressed frustration: “Grogu being given away and then immediately returning to Mando really bugs me tbh. Mando has potential as a character independent of Grogu, but I feel like merchandising changed the direction.”

At the conclusion of The Mandalorian season 2, Grogu departs with Luke Skywalker for training, only to reappear at the start of season 3 after their reunion in The Book of Boba Fett. Some fans speculate that season 3 was originally intended to delve deeper into Mando’s character without Grogu, rather than focusing on their adorable dynamic.

“They should’ve had one season without Grogu,” another fan chimed in. “That way, bringing him back could feel earned. Give you time to miss him. The way they handled it made it feel like Grogu was just on a field trip.”

Another fan recalled moments from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, saying, “Remember when we thought Chewie was dead and then minutes later he wasn’t? Then a bit later, we thought C-3PO was dead… and then he wasn’t. That bothered me in the moment so bad both times.” In the film, both Chewbacca and C-3PO experience “fake-out” deaths, leading to a desire among fans for the writers to take more definitive risks with character fates.

“Put Finn in there, too,” another fan added humorously. “He might’ve been on screen, but they abandoned him as a character completely.” This sentiment resonates with many, including John Boyega, who previously mentioned that he envisioned Finn becoming a Jedi. Unfortunately, this intriguing character hasn’t appeared in any live-action projects since The Rise of Skywalker, although Boyega did voice him in the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.
